Another challenging quest I've embarked on was painting the cloak. I'm saying challenging, because once you add the paint on, it's there forever and you can't erase it anymore, so I had to be very careful with every movement I've made.
The cloak, once a relic of the past, becomes a canvas for the artist's creative expression, imbuing it with layers of meaning and significance.
I have chosen gold metallic Lumiere fabric paint, as I've worked with them before and they scream quality! The use of this paint adds a touch of opulence and luminosity to the cloak. Gold, throughout history, has been associated with divinity, royalty, and enlightenment. It represents the pursuit of inner transformation and the quest for spiritual elevation.
By painting the cloak in gold, I've bestow upon it a sense of sacredness and mysticism, elevating its purpose beyond a mere garment. The choice to incorporate universal symbols onto the cloak amplifies its inherent power. As I have mentioned in my previous posts, the presence of snakes symbolises transformation, rebirth, and wisdom. They are often associated with shedding old skin and embracing new beginnings.
The labyrinth, with its winding paths, symbolises the journey of self-discovery, the intricate twists and turns of life's challenges, and the search for one's true essence. The eye, a timeless symbol found across cultures, represents knowledge, awareness, and the ability to see beyond the surface. It serves as a reminder to delve deeper, to perceive the hidden truths that lie beneath the surface of existence.
The eternal tree, often depicted with roots firmly planted in the earth and branches reaching towards the heavens, signifies growth, strength, and connection to the cycles of life. The cosmic egg, a symbol of creation and potential, encapsulates the limitless possibilities that exist within the universe. It speaks of birth, growth, and the continuous unfolding of the cosmos. Finally, the inclusion of runes adds an ancient and mystical element to the cloak, each rune carrying its own rich symbolism and connection to the realms of divination and ancient wisdom.
The performance featuring the painted cloak takes on a profound significance, as it becomes a visual representation of the Minotaur's plight. Trapped within the labyrinth, the Minotaur sings its cursed song of loneliness, longing for escape and redemption. The cloak serves as a poignant reminder that even monsters deserve compassion and understanding. In this transformative act, I will weave together elements of myth, symbolism, and the human condition.
Through the painted cloak, I convey a narrative of self-reflection, the yearning for liberation, and the inherent complexity of our shared existence. It invites viewers to contemplate the depths of empathy, recognising that even those who society deems monstrous are deserving of empathy and the chance to find their own path towards liberation.
