Throughout my journey in the university (MA Fine Art module), I have embarked on a profound exploration of my artistic abilities.
This statement serves as a reflection and critical analysis of my artistic achievements, considering the aims and objectives stated in my proposal, as well as the learning outcomes and assessment criteria set for the module. The aims outlined in my proposal were multifaceted, encompassing various aspects of artistic expression.
Firstly, I sought to engage in daily dream journaling, using both written and sketching techniques to document the depths of my subconscious. This practice allowed me to delve into the realm of dreams and unlock a wellspring of inspiration for my artistic endeavours.
Moreover, I aimed to creatively express dream themes through automatist and veristic methods. The abstract and symbolic approaches allowed me to explore the rich visual language of dreams, delving into the intricate tapestry of surrealism.
Through this exploration, I not only expanded my technical skills but also deepened my understanding of the connection between the subconscious mind and artistic creation.
One of the most ambitious objectives in my proposal was the creation of a performance that would explore the roots of surrealism in a post-Soviet country and my identity as a Moldovan artist. The envisioned performance aimed to connect the Labyrinth of the Minotaur with the labyrinth of the mind, unveiling hidden layers of meaning through a mask and a cloak adorned with Moldovan motifs and universal symbols. Accompanied by a captivating song, this performance aimed to unlock the gate into the people's subconscious.
Consistent drawing, writing, and daily reading practices were integral to this process, fueling my creative vision and storytelling abilities. Additionally, I undertook additional digital and mixed media projects, experimenting with collage using found objects and materials. This exploration allowed me to expand my artistic repertoire and explore new avenues of creativity.
One notable accomplishment during my MA year was the group exhibition "How did that happen" where I showcased my sculpted Minotaur mask, a cloak painted with universal symbols, a hand-drawn labyrinth on the floor using soil, and a performance in which I embodied the character of the Minotaur while singing an old Moldovan song and other symbolical acts.
The public's reactions to this immersive experience varied greatly, ranging from fear to enchantment. Witnessing the audience's diverse responses and observing them immerse themselves in the narrative of my performance provided invaluable insight into the emotional impact of my work. Although I had to face my fear and anxiety of performing in front of a public, this act was very rewarding in many ways and I am happy I found the will to do it. Also, I think that we have done a great job at installing all our group pieces in a way that’s captivating to the eye and our tutor was very helpful with advices and ideas on this.
In conclusion, throughout this first MA year, I have constantly pushed the boundaries of my creativity and ventured into uncharted territories. The challenges I encountered in exploring new mediums and materials have allowed me to develop a more comprehensive understanding of artistic expression. By embracing the unknown, I have nurtured my imagination, expanded my technical skills, and broadened my artistic vision.
The installation “Labyrinth of the Mind” stands as a testament to my growth as an artist and the diverse reactions it elicited from the public. This MA year has been transformative, enabling me to reach new heights of creativity and propelling me forward on my artistic journey with a renewed sense of purpose and vision.
Bellow are some photos of my installation within the exhibition. (the video for the performance shall come later)
