To get ready for my end of the year performance, I have decided to go to Blackpool Sands beach and draw a large scale labyrinth. Initially, I only had the idea to draw it with a stick and rope, however , I have found that this technique wasn't too visible, so I had to look around and find natural resources around me. Luckily, there was plenty of dry seaweed on the beach.
I'll call this "it was meant to be"!
By combining elements of drawing, symbolism, and personal embodiment, I have created a multidimensional experience that invites for contemplation and reflection. The act of drawing a large-scale labyrinth creates a captivating visual focal point for the performance.
The labyrinth, a symbol of intricate paths and challenges, represents the Minotaur's entrapment within his own existence. Through the medium of seaweed, a natural and transient material, I have engaged with the transitory nature of life and the ever-changing circumstances we find ourselves in.
Wearing a magical cloak imbued with symbols adds an element of mysticism and transformation to the performance. The cloak becomes a conduit, that connects me to the ancient symbolism and mythological context of the Minotaur's story. The symbols on the cloak, carefully chosen and painted, serve as a visual language that speaks to the deeper meanings and emotions encapsulated within the myth. The Minotaur mask I've made, completes the transformation into the character of the mythical creature.
As I've put the mask on my head, I've stepped into the role of the Minotaur, embodying his struggles, isolation, and longing for escape. Through this act of artistic transformation, I have bridged the gap between the mythical realm and my own personal expression, offering a unique interpretation of the Minotaur's story. The underlying theme of the performance, that even monsters deserve another chance, resonates deeply.
By utilising surreal art movements and singing, I communicate the potential for redemption and liberation. The Minotaur, traditionally depicted as a fearsome and misunderstood creature, finds solace and a means of escape through artistic expression. This message carries a profound universal truth, reminding us of the transformative power of art, empathy, and understanding.
Through my embodiment of the Minotaur, I am challenging preconceived notions and societal judgments, encouraging compassion and empathy for those who are often marginalised or deemed monstrous. In this act of artistic expression, I offer a glimpse of hope and the possibility for redemption, emphasising the importance of second chances.
Overall, my performance is a thought-provoking and immersive-surreal experience, blending mythology, symbolism, and personal expression. It serves as a reminder of the transformative power of art, the significance of empathy, and the inherent worth of every individual, even those society often casts aside.
