As human beings, we are surrounded by various possibilities and art is one, if not the biggest form of exploration. I strongly believe that literature is a strong root for art, as we define everything around us through words. Our feelings become meaningless ghosts if not expressed, therefore reading helps anyone grow a rich world inside, which is so valuable for the growth of our creativity.
In this session with Laura(who I think is a very knowledgeable teacher, with a great ability of keeping a flow in her thoughts and enrolling us into the subject with relevant questions and creative exercises) we discovered the work of
- Sophie Strand, who is a writer who focuses on the intersection of spirituality, storytelling, & ecology.
"Today it doesn’t matter whether or not I can prove how alive the world is. It doesn’t matter if I can prove an electron is having an experience. What matters is that I can feel stories everywhere. Stories that don’t depend on language. Stories that don’t depend on singularity. Stories that only occur interstitially, between beings, in the fertile, friction-prickled boundaries between differences."
- Studio Morrison - Artists Heather Peak and Ivan Morison who established an ambitious collaborative practice that transcends traditional divisions between art, architecture, theatre and activism. Their work is often performance-based and site-specific, existing as one-off events, social projects, or large-scale installations and buildings in public spaces.
- Ursula le Guin, who was an American author best known for her works of speculative fiction, including science fiction works set in her "Hainish" universe, and the "Earthsea" fantasy series.
An interesting quote I read from her: “We read books to find out who we are. What other people, real or imaginary, do and think and feel... is an essential guide to our understanding of what we ourselves are and may become.”
- Abigail Reynolds, an artist who lives in St Ives and creates interesting, mosaic like perspectives in her collages.
On the second session we've been asked to bring collage materials, so that we can create a a piece that will reflect our practice. I've randomly chosen some cut outs and pages, as when I'm creating, I don't like to have anything planned. I have a lot of "World of Wonder" magazines that I've used and I have cut texts and images from , and they worked perfectly in my fantastical image. Eyes, flowers, books, owls, horns, butterflies, shells are common elements that you can find in my collages. They describe my observing abilities, the unconditional love for nature and books, the thirst for knowledge and the perpetuation of beauty.
